LTE Technology Certification

This 5 day programme covers all aspects of LTE core network and radio interface technologies, beginning on Day 1 with an overview of LTE including an examination of the broadband wireless market and the role that LTE plays in the future of mobile broadband. Day 1 also gives an overview of the LTE architecture and discusses some of the options for service delivery and voice over LTE systems.

Day 2 and 3 focuses on the radio interface, the concepts of OFDMA covered followed by a thorough examination of the LTE physical layer including the time domain structure and the role of logical, transport and physical channels. The MAC, RLC and PDCP layers are explained and the primary signalling layer of RRC and its relationship with Non Access Stratum signalling protocols is covered. MIMO and adaptive antennas and the performance benefits they bring to LTE are also explained. In addition the network planning life cycle is studied, showing what information is required and how the planning and decision making process is determined.

Day 4 and 5 turns to the LTE network and examines the architecture of the eUTRAN and Evolved Packet Core. The basic architecture and functions of the new nodes are examined along with the interfaces that interconnect them. The signalling protocols used on each of the interfaces are covered and procedural examples are given. The role of IMS is also shown here and its connection with the core network and en

Outcomes and Competency Development

Participants will develop or be able to:

  • Outline the overall LTE architecture, explaining the role of each element of the User Equipment, eUTRAN, and EPC
  • Describe the function and operation of each LTE Radio Access and Core Network elements
  • Relate protocols to the relevant interfaces, describing the basic requirements and principles associated with each interface
  • Explain the basic operation of the air interface, describing the capabilities, advantages, requirements and operation of the OFDMA system applied to LTE, together with the basic protocol structure and resulting impact on services
  • State the transport protocols to be adopted at each point in the network and appreciate the reasons why those protocols have been chosen for standardisation
  • Recognise and follow LTE basic procedures, relating each phase in a procedure to the relevant LTE or transport network protocol operation
  • Thoroughly understand the requirement for IP in Modern Mobile networks, identifying its role, advantages, disadvantages, and general operation
  • Identify the Signalling Protocols used on each major interface.
  • Show the operation of bearer control and explain how QoS is implemented in LTE
  • Recognise the different addressing and identity schemes used in LTE
  • Discuss with confidence, some of the issues related to implementing LTE networks
  • Explain the necessary steps in the network planning life-cycle
